I know nothing about art criticism but I eat it up every time because it's fascinating and enthralling. Do continue

These reviews give me a kind of fun, disorienting feeling, like what I imagine someone who’s never seen a film would experience reading Sight & Sound (I know nothing about contemporary art). Do you give so many 1 stars because the London art world is a bit rubbish? Or are you very exacting?

Great analogy as I know nothing about film. I would like to say it’s because I have high standards, but I really don’t, in fact I think a lot of American art critics would find me too generous. A lot of art in London is extremely bad. Although there’s also a bit of survivor bias — the art I do like I don’t always write about, instead I interview the artists or get drunk in their studios, or both.

Is that Doug Allen’s work? I love Doug Allen.

Matt Bors! I assume inspired by the style.

Have you seen the Elective Affinities exhibition in Swedenborg House? Would love to know your thoughts if so, I’m planning on seeing it in two weeks, seems super interesting

Spot on on Hambling, it seems we have to like her because she looks very sharply at the camera when photographed and her hair looks cool... Very sophisticated, yes, but bad painting. All compositions the same, the color is very poor and the portraits are ugly as fuck. I feel there is this determination in finding "great overlooked women from the past" that is sometimes so forced, like our favorite languid Celia Paul...
